QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Career Development Awards will only be granted to qualifying medical schools in support of individuals holding a M.D., D.O., D.V.M. or Ph.D. degree. Furthermore, the Awards are limited to applicants from the following medical schools and their affiliated research centers:
- Loyola University/Chicago
- Northwestern University
- Rosalind Franklin University
- Rush University Medical Center
- The University of Chicago
- The University of Colorado Health Sciences Center
- The University of Illinois
Institutions should select only individuals who are junior members of the faculty and wish to make academic medicine, research and teaching their careers and who have demonstrated enthusiasm and talent for teaching and who have been involved in research endeavors during their prior years of medical and scientific training, either in medical school, during a subspecialty fellowship or as a post-doctoral fellow.
In the application, the institution is expected to demonstrate strong institutional support, such as financial support in the form of salary and technical support, and a plan for the individual's career development. The institution should clearly indicate how it intends to assist the individual in advancing and enhancing his/her academic career. The institution should indicate whether it will provide laboratory space, supplies and start-up support. The institution should also describe how “protected time” will be provided.
The Foundation will generally not act favorably with respect to applications involving an established independent investigator. Rather, the Foundation is interested in receiving applications involving individuals of junior faculty rank who have demonstrated promise and desire to become established and independent investigators and teachers in academic medical environments.
A Schweppe Foundation Career Development Award should generally not be requested with respect to individuals above the rank of Assistant Professor. In most cases, it is expected that the particular individual will have held a junior faculty position less than four years following the completion of formal training.
A Career Development Award will not be made if the particular individual has received a NIH-RO1 award or equivalent level funding prior to the submission of the application. Further, if the Foundation has made a decision to make a Career Development Award and the particular individual then receives a NIH-RO1 award or equivalent level funding prior to the start date of such Career Development Award, the Foundation's decision to make such award will be deemed to have been rescinded. The particular institution must immediately notify the Foundation that such NIH-RO1 research support or equivalent level funding has been received.
