SELECTION
The Medical Advisory Committee of the Foundation will make all decisions relating to the research awards to be granted. This committee of the Board of Directors of the Foundation consists of science faculty representatives of all of the Chicago area medical schools and the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. The members of this committee have expertise in a variety of medical specialties.
In May of each year, each qualifying institution's Office of the Dean will receive a formal announcement of the availability of the Foundation's Career Development Awards. The deadline for receipt of applications is September 1. Award notifications are made in December, and award the becomes effective on April 1 of the following calendar year.
The Foundation will make the final selection from applications submitted in a timely fashion. From among the pool of applications received, a maximum of four two-year. Career Development Awards will be made each year, however, the maximum number of Career Development Awards given annually may be increased or decreased from year to year, as determined by the Board of Directors of the Foundation.
Grant applications will be evaluated based upon a variety of criteria relating to the particular individual, including dedication to scholarship, professional and personal accomplishments, clarity of vision with respect to career development goals and means for achieving such goals, evidence of diligence, demonstrated maturity and perceived qualities of leadership, especially as they may impact the individual's future in academic medicine. Also of importance is the nature of the research project and its content, the degree of novelty and mode of presentation. Major emphasis will also be given to the nature and degree of the institution's support.
All awards will be made on a non-discriminatory basis – that is, without regard to the investigator's race, color, national or ethnic origin, sex, physical disability or other legally protected status. All decisions with respect to the Foundation's Career Development Awards will be made on the basis of the Medical Advisory Committee's judgment, based on the criteria and factors set forth in this booklet.
As stated above, award notification will be made in December and the funding of the grant will begin on April 1 of the following calendar year.
