The research grant is an award for excellence and should be used in the best interest of the individual and his/her project. It is intended to motivate the individual and allow him/her freedom to develop more fully individual capabilities, including exposure to other investigators and institutions of excellence. The Foundation believes that the importance of such unique kinds of new knowledge and learned technologies, allied to the individual's area of research interest, should help to ensure success with respect to the individual's career development and should bolster the individual's commitment to a career in academic medicine.

In order to assist the individual to establish an independent and successful investigative program and develop strong teaching skills, a portion of the funds from a Schweppe award may be used to enable the individual to attend scientific meetings and to purchase journals, textbooks and computer software pertaining to his/her specialty interest, particularly such items that pertain to his/her research undertaking. A portion of the award funds may be used as salary for support staff for the individual's laboratory, and also may be used to enable the individual to visit different laboratories and meet other investigators for the purpose of gaining additional knowledge and to learn new and special techniques pertinent to the individual's area of research interest. The individual also may spend up to twelve months of specialized training at another institution as discussed more fully below. The Foundation encourages such pursuits and intends to allow funds granted to support such objectives.

No part of any award funds is to be used to defray any portion of the salary of the particular individual or to defray any administrative or indirect costs of the grantee institution or any affiliate.

An appropriate acknowledgement of the Foundation's support should be made in connection with the publication of any article or other material based on research made possible by the receipt of a Schweppe Foundation Career Development Award.
