FOCUS ON PROTECTED TIME IN WHICH TO DO RESEARCH
A major portion of the individual's time must be devoted to the research program described in the application. This requirement does not preclude teaching or limited clinical activities necessary for the individual's full academic development. The Foundation acknowledges that teaching, mentoring students, writing medically related papers and chapters and attending local or national conferences or seminars related to the particular individual's specialty interest and research undertaking also contribute materially to the individual's full development with respect to a career in academic medicine. As stated above, these awards have been established in order to allow the grantee institution to make it possible for one or more of its outstanding junior faculty members to achieve important investigative and teaching goals early in the individual's career, and the achievement of these goals, it is hoped, will provide strong motivation for such individual to continue his/her plan to pursue academic medicine as a career.
In order that this objective may be met, the award is intended to allow the individual sufficient “protected time” from administrative, teaching and substantial clinical duties so that such individual will have the time necessary to carry out fully his/her research project and to develop fully as an independent and highly productive investigator.
