RESPONSIBILITY OF MEDICAL SCHOOLS
The applicants for the Foundation's Career Development Awards are limited to Chicago area medical schools and to the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. The selection process, in essence, involves two distinct phases. The particular medical school selects the investigator and such individual's research project that will be the subject of the application to the Foundation. It is to be expected that an institution will only submit applications to the Foundation that are viewed by the institution as involving individuals of outstanding promise and as involving highly worthy research projects. The institution will also determine the level and degree of its support of the individual and his/her research project as more fully discussed below. The second phase of the selection process involves review of applications by the Foundation's Medical Advisory Committee, a committee of the Foundation's Board of Directors.
The Dean or other designated official of the particular institution should appoint a selection committee to review and to make decisions with respect to applications. No more than three applications in any one year may be submitted to the Foundation by an institution (and its affiliated research centers, departments, teaching hospitals or other units within the medical center complex). The institution is expected to have determined that the application is complete.
The institution will be treated as the grantee of each such award. Accordingly, award checks will be made payable to the institution, which will have the exclusive responsibility for administering the grant funds. The institution will also have the exclusive responsibility and obligation for meeting any applicable income tax reporting (or other income tax requirements) as to the use of the award funds by the individual.
